Urban Safari 2010 – Barnyard BBQ Bash
Wednesday, May 5th, 2010Upham’s Corner Main Street (UCMS) presents the third annual Urban Safari, an event celebrating the Upham’s Corner community and supporting its business revitalization. Event Details and Ticket Purchase
The Urban Safari will be held Wednesday, June 16, 2010 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm at Franklin Park Zoo’s Barnyard, 1 Franklin Park Road, Boston MA 02121. Urban Safari began in 2007, as way to underwrite management and execution of the UCMS goals to support small businesses in order to create a more thriving Upham’s Corner community. As one of Dorchester’s main business districts, merchants, property owners, residents, and city officials seek through UCMS to create new permanent jobs with an optimal mix of retail businesses and changed shopping patterns that fit the priorities of Upham’s Corner’s twenty-first century residents.
The Barnyard at Franklin Park Zoo immerses guests in a fascinating experience. Visitors will not want to miss the dozens of animals including prairie dogs, ducks, and a rare Amur Leopard. A petting area which contains sheep, goats, horses and other animals, makes the barnyard a truly unforgettable experience. But this fun-filled event is more than just a night at the zoo; the evening’s adventure includes music by the Goodtime Stringband, food and drink, games and prizes, and a silent auction.
Established in 1996, UCMS has been able to facilitate community participation to turn around an era of disinvestment and decline that happened in the second half of the twentieth century. Through difficult times, the community remained loyal to its home, as it understood as long as the neighborhood’s history and cultural diversity were preserved; the soul of Upham’s Corner would survive. Founded by local residents, businesses, and agencies, UCMS is charged with the task of reinventing Upham’s Corner into its former vibrant and magnetic business and residential district. UCMS engages the Upham’s Corner community in its efforts to preserve and revitalize the neighborhood’s history, culture and commercial center.
