Nemofotmad Chord Book
Tuesday, December 16th, 2008I just wanted to write a post about something I have found to be a new favorite thing! A magical index card-sized chord book!
So, there is this person, Sarah McUmber-House, who has created this great thing for folks who enjoy playing in old time, traditional and celtic music jams.
IMHO, The two biggest jam-busters are:
1. The inability to call out a tune to play next (no-one can ever think of any songs under pressure!)
2. Not being able to back-up an unfamiliar tune.
These things are not a problems if you have this book in hand: Nemofotmad Chord Book, Vol. 1: Chords for More than 200 Tunes in the Celtic & Old-Time Traditions
The book is as it is says… a chord book. There are no dots on lines like in sheet music. Instead, you have square blocks with a letter, representing the chord, in it. At the top is the tune names in alphabetical order and a chord and the style of tune: Reel, Jig, Rag, Polka, Set Dance, Hornpipe, etc…
It contains the chords for over 200 tunes in the Celtic and Old-time traditions, so it’s pretty easy to find a tune that the jam/circle will be familiar with.
From Sarah’s website:
Affectionately known as “the Throw-Down Book”, you just open it to the tune,
‘throw it down’ in the middle of the group, and several players can see the chord changes at the same time.
The Nemofotmad Chord Book is
- Spiral bound, with laminated covers, and index weight pages.
- In alphabetical order and set in a 4.25″X5.5″ easy-to-read format, clearly showing the chord changes for each tune.
- Identifies the Key for each, as well as the type of tune it is. (Reel, Hornpipe, Waltz, etc.)
