Innovation Black Bass StringsSaturday, July 18th, 2009
Often times at performances, other upright bass players will approach Andy to ask if he is using gut strings. Or they will ask about the “cool” looking black strings on his bass, and what they are made of. Well folks, we are now pleased to officially endorse Innovation Strings and recommend them to other musicians!
Innovation Double Bass Strings have a unique, non-metallic core which provide a gut-like tone without the cost or maintenance of gut upright bass strings. The strings hold their pitch well in climate and temperature changes and hold up well to aggressive playing.
Andy’s string of choice, Innovation UB’s (Ultra-Black), are named for their distinctive “Ultra Black” colored outer winding, and work well for artists seeking a fuller, darker-sounding string for traditional bluegrass music and other roots music styles. They are constructed using a flexible braided core with a black tape winding. The black tape winding is kinder to the fingers that a steel wrap string, and traditional gut strings.
UB strings have a darker tone, like most gut strings, but are a bit more distinct in sound (more snap!). They are a high tension string and are a less “twangy” alternative to other popular weed whacker strings. The flexibility of the core (a nylon wound in a “rope” pattern) allows you to really dig in without having the string excessively modulate out of tune. Yet the outer wrapping has a hard enough surface to get a nice “growl” or “mwah” from fingerboard interaction.
